A match report from 1873

Uppingham Victoria Cricket Club v Mr C. J. Thornton’s Eleven.  This match was on the new ground at Luffenham on Saturday last, and resulted in a victory for Uppingham with six wickets to fall.  For Mr Thornton’s team C. L. Brooke and Rev P.G. Munro batted well, and Mr Thornton himself contributed materially to the score by some star – tickling hits, one of which travelled a quarter of a mile, “more or less” at a tremendous pace.  The ball came in contact with an ash tree, and brought down an immense arm, which fell amongst the stock in trade of a vendor of ginger beer, who, being of the more sensitive sex, gave vent to her consternation by a shrill cry, much resembling the scream of a steam whistle.  The bowler Mr Goodwin (for whom the utmost sympathy was felt) declared with great feeling that another such hit would break his heart.  We are happy and able to give publicity to the fact that his apprehensions were not realised, that the club still retains the services of its excellent bowler, and that the heart which was in such imminent peril of fracture, is still intact, and susceptible of the most tender emotions.  The comparatively small score of Mr Thornton’s team is mainly attributable to the admirable bowling of Keeble and Goodwin.  For the club Messrs W.Gray and C.J. Brown batted in good form, the latter driving one of Mr P. M. Thornton’s “fine old – fashioned sneaks” into a stone pit in a field situated (we understood) somewhere in the adjoining parish of North Luffenham, six runs were put on for this hit.  The wicket keeping of Waugh was all that could be desired, and the long stopping of Mossendew was well worthy of note, only two byes were scored off him during the day, although the ground played somewhat “bumpy”
