 Uppingham v Queniborough

Burrough League Plate Final 2009

Uppingham Town made it 3 0ut of 3 cup-final victories for the season when they beat Queniborough in the final of the Burrough League plate competition held at Melton Towns ground on Friday evening.

Uppingham were without regulars Martin Bennett, Mark Cox, Joe Clarke & Tom Scott who were all away at a Gay Pride concert in Barcelona but the players called in did their club proud.

With rain threatening the game was shortened to 16overs per side & Uppingham won the toss & decided to bat first. Losing openers Jamie Dumford(2) & Dave Fish(6) cheaply wasn’t the best of starts for Town but this brought together Jamie Binley, who had scored 40 in the semi-final & Colan Bartram, an old head on old shoulders, & the scoreboard was soon ticking over. The first ball Binley faced was dispatched over the houses at the eastend of the ground & into the Saxby road, never to be seen again! With Bartram(32) pushing the ball around the field to give Binley the strike at every opportunity, he continued to bludgeon the ball around the ground & hit a match defining 73 as Uppingham posted a total of 122 from their 16 overs.

With man of the match Binley suitably warmed up, he was thrown the ball at the start of the Queniborough innings & produced a hostile display of bowling to take 4 wickets from his 6overs. Combined with Scott Green slowing the pace from the other end & a superb catch by Richard Lewin, Queniborough were soon on the back foot & they finished the match 40 runs short.

A well deserved victory for the Uppingham boys who were beaten finalists in the same competition last season.

Uppingham would like to thank the Burrough League committee for all their work in organising the competition & Everards for their sponsorship.
