 CHAMPIONS 2006

Won 12 –     Lost 4      – 2 Abandoned

We started the season on a cold wet Sunday back on the 23rd April against March Town, yes you’ve guessed it. We lost to keep the tradition going of losing the opening game of the season.

We then beat Wisbech by 10 wickets; followed by a last over victory against Yaxley.

Yaxley got their own back by beating us by 7 wickets two weeks later.  Onto Nassington with a win, two suburb catches by Ed Scott then a last ball victory v Ufford.  In my opinion this was the result of the season, chasing 236 at last a solid batting performance, Westy kicking the ball away to scramble a leg bye of the final ball.  Great win!

Down to earth with a bump losing at home to Barnack by 5 runs, we picked ourselves up to beat Perkins, Bartie scoring 76 and Billy Beaver was the star with the ball, 6 for 46.  On the hottest day of the year I again lost the toss, Wisbech elected to bat first.  We dropped a few easy chances until Martin Bennett took a brilliant catch at slip followed by 2 from John Collins. We were chasing 212, once again a last over win with Bartie and Chris Howe at the wicket to see the game home.

March Town came up against Coxie in form scoring 121 not out followed up by 5 for 30.  Martin Bennett scored 79 not out, in a stand with Coxie of 170 for the second wicket.  This was the highest partnership of the season.  Oli Webb bowled well to slow the run rate down. We won by 36 runs.

We then beat Railway at home before being stuffed by the Clough boys away at Ufford on a green wicket, followed by a 10 wicket win away at Railway.  Billy Beaver 5 for 17, Coxie 58 not out and John Collins 28 not out.

This set up a top of the table clash with Nassington, once again Coxie was in form scoring 122 not out, supported again by John Collins 39.  We set Nassington 206 for victory.  Nassington required 16 off  3 overs with 4 wickets in hand, then 4 to win off the last over with 3 wickets in hand.  Bartie then produced an over that will be remembered for a long time, a hat trick that won us the game by 3 runs. He is up for sporting moment of the year at the Rutland Times Sports Awards.  You,re our winner!

Down to Stamford, we were all out for 89, Bartie bowled 11 overs for 9 runs, Coxie 12 overs 3 for 7, Billy Beaver 10 overs 2 for 34, and finally Martin Bennett 12 overs 5 for 27.  We won by 3 runs.

Our final game was a must win to keep the pressure on Nassington v Barnack.  Barnack, finished on 150 for 9.  John Feetham with 54 not out was the star with the bat, Uppingham home in the 42nd over.

A great team performance though out the season, with ever player making contributions to us winning the league.

Stamford cups, once again we lost in both semi,s to the Ketton All stars.  A notable scalp was beating Market Deeping at home by 41 runs.

I must mention Kev Bennett, only 36 byes during 20 games though out the season.  Kev was the only player to play in every 1st team fixture during the 2006 season.

Big thank you to the following people;

Umpires – Mike Gaul, Richard West

Scorer – Pop Cox, Remi Brotherton

Groundsman – Charlie Scott, Mick Clarke

Tea Ladies – Patsy Bartrum, Claire Cox

Supporters – Very much appreciated by the players.

All Sponsors.

ALL players that have played in the 1st XL during the season.

So onto this season, gone are the days of pitching up at 1.20pm ready to start at 1.30pm.  This season we need to get the balance right between being more professional how we approach each game and most importantly keep enjoying it together when the going get tough.

Thursday night club net session, looking to introduce fielding drills etc.  I think we need it.

Finally, on behalf of the club I would like wish Coxie and already mentioned Bartie well at the Rutland Times Sports Awards next Friday.  I hope you have all registered your vote for Mark.
