Cricket club over first
hurdle in pitch quest
A cricket club is one step closer to owning
its own ground after councillors backed their
request to turn agricultural land into two
pitches.
Uppingham Cricket Club has always dreamt of
owning its own ground after years of playing at
Uppingham School and members were thrilled to
gain council approval this week.
Club chairman Charlie Scott said: "We are
indebted to the school for letting us use its
grounds but we have always wanted our own base.
"We are delighted that the planning application
was approved but it is still very early days.
"Planning consent was the first step on the
ladder and now we can start to look at funding."
The club hopes the England Cricket Board will be
able to offer financial backing.
The site of the club's plans is to the south of
Leicester Road in Uppingham opposite Shepherds
Way.
Uppingham county councillor Peter Ind, who lives
near the site, had raised concerns about the
speed of traffic travelling past the access
track but highways officers at Rutland County
Council had no objections.
At Tuesday's county planning meeting councillors
called for the access track to made of
hard-wearing material to prevent debris getting
onto the main road.
Cricket club members were also reminded that
plans for a pavilion or any fencing at the site
would need to be submitted separately. The plans
received unanimous support.
