Under 13 Tour of Suffolk   1st and 2nd September 2007

The under 13 tour of Suffolk proved to be a great success both on and off the field for players and supporters alike. An early meet at Uppingham meant the tents were being pitched before noon at the Camping ground at Saxmundham handily situated next to the cricket ground. By start of play some of the tents were even up!

The afternoons match was 30 over a side retire at 25. This was fortunate for Saxmundham as batting first Uppingham put on a formidable batting display amassing 175 with 4 retirements. Tom Roberts started the innings with an aggressive 25 retiring in the 6th over. Ben Harford played his usual cultured innings and scored 27 retired. Johnny Ashwin played a composed innings of 25 retired and Ed Wignall grafted hard for his 25 retired including probably the defensive shot of the tour when he hooked the fastest bowler of the day off his nose for a single to bring up his 25 retired.

Callum O’Berg 22 no and Jacob Norton 1no completed the batting. After the first over Saxmundham were in trouble with Jacob Norton taking two wickets shortly followed by one for Harry Robertson who bowled his usual tight lines. To their credit Saxmundham fought well and the total creeped up until wickets from George Scott, Alex Ashwin, Michael Boyd (helped by an excellent catch by Jacob Norton), Edward Wignall and two from Kyran Bartlett meant that Saxmundham finished on 143.

An excellent game played in good humour throughout.

Following the match a Barbeque was held at the clubhouse and this was followed by a lively game of football brought to an end only when the coaches could not see the ball anymore! Most of the teams then retired to the campsite and bed but the chat continued for some time

 to come.

Sunday morning and the camp was struck early and the bacon butties were well received. After this wholesome breakfast it was a short journey to Worlingworth and a game against a mixed team of U12-U15’s.

Uppingham batted first and a good innings of 25 retired from Alex Ashwin got the game off to a good start. Michael Boyd scored freely to record 28 retired the highest score of the weekend. Useful knocks from Tom Roberts and Ed Wignall again saw a total of 126 on the board.

The Worlingworth innings got off to a good start with Callum O’Berg playing for the opposition and scoring 18. Tight bowling from Rachel Richardson 2-7 George Scott 1-6 and Johnny Ashwin 1-6 meant the score was kept down to 81 and Uppingham remained undefeated.

Thanks for organising the tour must to The U13 coaching team of Mark Norton Rob Roberts and Brian Robertson. Thanks must also go to our hosts for making our first junior tour a great success.

Tour Party: Johnny Ashwin, Alex Ashwin, Kyran Bartlett, Michael Boyd, Luke Hopper, Callum O’Berg, Rachel Richardson, Tom Roberts, Harry Robertson, George Scott, Jacob Norton, Ben Harford, Ed Wignall.
